PS5 - Playstation 5
The Playstation 5 is the successor to the Playstation 4 (PS4). The console is manufactured by Sony Interactive Entertainment. PS5 was launched in 2019 and released worldwide on November 12, 2020. The console is part of the ninth generation of video game consoles. The Sony PlayStation 5 has a much more powerful GPU and support for 8K. But only a few game titles actually render the images at that resolution. Instead, most will render in 4K and then scale it up to 8K. The new GPU is based on AMD's 7nm Navi architecture, has 10 times the performance of the original PS4, and features ray tracing to correct lighting effects in 3D graphics. This means that you can expect higher quality titles for PS5 than PS4. PS5 has also received a major update to the controller that comes with the console, DualSense.
The console has a built-in solid-state drive (SSD) for faster boot-up speeds and longer loading times for games. Sony revealed that the new SSD has a refresh rate of up to 10 GB/s, which is faster than any SATA SSD on the market. In addition to this, you will get 1TB of storage as standard to give you plenty of space for all your games and saved files. The console runs on a more powerful version of the PS4 system software.
The PS5 has enhanced social features that make it easier to connect with other players or see what your friends are playing. The PS5's camera can track your body movements in real-time. The PS5 makes it easier than ever to stream games in 4K quality at 60 fps (frames per second). This means you can stream your favourite games to social media, YouTube and Twitch. The PS5 can also use YouTube's own 4K recording system to record clips of your gameplay in HD quality.
Mark Cerny, Sony's chief architect for PlayStation, first began designing the PlayStation 5 around 2012 after seeing interest in the PlayStation 4 begin to wane due to competing consoles and mobile games. In February 2018, rumours emerged of a "PlayStation 5" codenamed "Erebus", which would feature a quadruple-core graphics processor based on AMD's Navi architecture. In March 2019, several patents filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) noted that the company is developing VR functionality for the PlayStation 5, which may require additional hardware in the console itself due to bandwidth limitations.
The console has backward compatibility with PS4 games, enhanced social features and streaming capabilities. It is not known if all these innovations will be included in the PlayStation 5's successor (e.g. PlayStation 6).
